On November 5, 2007, when Jin Hui was only four years old, he was burned while playing with other children.  As he hid in a shed used for storing firewood while playing hide and seek, other children lit the shed on fire and he was unable to get out before suffering severe burns. Jin Hui received second and third degree burns over 58% of his head, limbs, and body. He has since lost his right arm, but with the help of HandReach has been able to obtain surgeries needed to improve his health.
